Miscellaneous Dick Van Dyke Show Vantastix The 10th Decade Kennedy Center Honors

In 2006, Dick had the opportunity to appeal to an entirely new generation of fans when he appeared as a security guard in the innovative family-oriented movie Night at the Museum.

The cast included Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Owen Wilson, and Dick’s co-star from The Comic, Mickey Rooney.  The story involves a Museum of Natural History filled with exhibits which come to life at sunset (creating havoc for new employee Stiller) as well as the pursuit of a mysterious Egyptian stone which causes the chaos.

The film, a financial success, received mixed reviews, but critics generally agreed that Dick’s involvement was a highlight.  Dick’s role as one of a trio of retired night watchmen was reminiscent of the kindly character in a Scooby Doo cartoon who is later unmasked as the bad guy at the end of the mystery.  The cast and crew were impressed with Dick’s willingness to do his own stunts.

Stiller described Dick’s dancing skills as “incredible,” adding, “I think there is a portrait of Dorian Van Dyke somewhere in the closet.”

During the film's end credit sequence, two scenes featuring Dick, Mickey Rooney, and Bill Cobbs appear on the side.

Dick filmed a cameo for the 2009 sequel, but his scene ended up on the cutting room floor.  It is, however, available on the DVD extras.
